Disney Is About to Get a Lot Bigger at Sea - Here's What's Coming ⚓

If you thought Disney Cruise Line had been busy lately, it is only getting started.

Disney has rapidly expanded its presence at sea in recent years, and there are plenty more ships on the horizon. The fleet has already grown to eight vessels, with several more in development that will take Disney cruises into new markets and introduce an entirely new class of ship.

And 2029 is shaping up to be a particularly interesting year.

From six ships to a global fleet

The latest phase of Disney Cruise Line's expansion began with the arrival of the Disney Wish in 2022, followed by the Disney Treasure in 2024 and Disney Destiny in 2025. Then came the Disney Adventure, which began sailing from Singapore in March 2026. It marked Disney Cruise Line's first ship based in Asia and opened up a whole new part of the world to the Disney cruise experience.

That takes the current fleet to eight ships, but Disney has made it clear that this is far from the finished product. The next named addition will be the Disney Believe, expected to debut in late 2027 as the fourth ship in the Wish class. Like its sister ships, it will bring together Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars stories with its own distinctive theme.

The Disney Believe will centre around the idea of promise and possibilities, with experiences inspired by stories including Encanto, Frozen, Moana, Snow White and The Little Mermaid.

And then things get particularly interesting.

Disney is going smaller

While cruise lines have spent years competing to build bigger and bigger ships, Disney is taking a slightly different approach with its next generation. Three new ships are being developed as an entirely new class, expected to measure around 100,000 gross tons and accommodate approximately 3,000 guests.

That puts them between Disney's classic Magic class ships and the much larger Dream and Wish class vessels. It is not simply a change in size for the sake of it. Disney says the smaller design should allow the cruise line to reach more ports and destinations around the world, including places that cannot accommodate its larger ships.

For travellers, that could ultimately be one of the most exciting parts of the expansion. More ships does not necessarily have to mean more of the same Caribbean itineraries. A more varied fleet gives Disney greater flexibility to explore destinations that are not practical for its biggest vessels.

The new ships are also being designed with efficiency in mind, with a streamlined hull, next generation propulsion systems and the ability to use shore power while in port.

Disney is also heading to Japan

The expansion is not just about adding ships to the existing network. Disney has partnered with Oriental Land Company, the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, to bring Disney cruise vacations to Japan.

The new ship is expected to begin sailing from Japan in 2029, giving Disney a dedicated cruise presence in the country. The vessel will be owned and operated by Oriental Land Company under the agreement, rather than directly by Disney Cruise Line.

It is another sign that Disney sees cruising as a way to take its brand into markets that would be much harder to reach with a theme park. A cruise ship can take the experience with it, and Disney is increasingly using that flexibility to bring its version of a family holiday to more parts of the world.

2029 could be a big year

Disney's original expansion plans called for the fleet to reach 13 ships by 2031. Since then, Disney has continued to add vessels, with the Disney Adventure and Disney Destiny now part of the fleet and the Disney Believe due in 2027.

The next few years could therefore look very different. In 2027, the Disney Believe is expected to join the fleet, while 2029 is set to bring several major additions. Disney is expected to introduce its new smaller class of ships, while the Oriental Land Company operated Disney ship is also scheduled to begin sailing from Japan.

There has already been an update to the original timeline, too. Two of the three smaller ships are now expected to arrive in 2029, with the final vessel following in 2030. If the current schedule holds, Disney's 13 ship fleet could therefore be complete by the end of 2030 rather than 2031.

That would make 2029 a particularly busy year for Disney at sea.

More Disney, more places to explore

For travellers, the most interesting question is not necessarily how many ships Disney will eventually have. It is where those ships will take them.

The Disney Adventure has already opened the door to Southeast Asia, Japan is next, and the new smaller class could give Disney access to ports that its larger ships cannot reach. With more ships available, there should also be more opportunities to spread Disney Cruise Line's itineraries across different regions and seasons.

Disney has described its cruise ships as ambassadors for the brand, and that is probably the simplest way to look at the expansion. The ships are not just another holiday product. They are a way for Disney to take a little bit of its world with it.
